Post- Spring Movie Preview

January and February are typically the darkest times for moviegoers. Studios tend to dump their worst movies during this time since the awards season is over, the holidays have ended, and people just do not tend to go to the movies as much. Luckily, spring is right around of the corner! Here are ten of the movies we are looking forward to:

A Prophet

Release: February 26 (limited)

Director: Jacques Audiard

Starring: Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif

Synopsis: Award-winning French film about a young illiterate Arab man who, while serving a six-year prison sentence, falls in league with the Corsican Mafia, growing in power and stature until he can turn against the mafia boss.

Alice in Wonderland

Release: March 5

Directed by: Tim Burton

Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska

Synopsis: A sequel to the original, well-known story, now 19-year old Alice (Wasikowska) accidentally returns to the Underland. There she is told she is the only one who can slay the Jabberwocky, a dragon controlled by the villainous Red Queen (Bonham Carter).

Remember Me

Clash of the Titans

Directed by: Louis Leterrier

Starring: Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes

Synopsis: A remake of the 1981 film, Son of a god but raised as a mortal, Perseus (Worthington) embarks on a perilous, action-filled journey to defeat Hades (Fiennes), who threatens to unleash hell on earth and steal the power of Zeus, the king of the gods (Neeson).

Hot Tub Time Machine

Greenberg

Synopsis: Out-of-work loner Roger Greenberg (Stiller), house-sitting for his younger, and more successful, brother, attempts to reconnect with old friends and embarks on a perplexing romantic relationship, both with decidedly mixed results.

Leaves of Grass

Starring: Edward Norton, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon

Synopsis: Edward Norton plays two identical but completely opposite twins, one an Ivy League professor and the other a small-town marijuana grower, who reconvene in their Oklahoma home town to take down an enemy drug lord (Dreyfuss).

Wall Street 2

Starring: Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan

Synopsis: Set 23 years after the first Wall Street, which starred Douglas, the film revolves around Gordon Gekko (Douglas) trying to warn the financial world about the impending stock market crash. He also attempts to reconnect with his daughter with the help of her Wall Street trader fiance, Jacob (LaBeouf), who has a score to settle.

Mother and Child

Release: May 7

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Starring: Naomi Watts, Samuel L. Jackson, Annette Bening

Synopsis: Follows multiple narrative strands concerning motherhood: Karen (Bening) grapples with constant reminders of the daughter she gave up for adoption at the age of 14; Elizabeth (Watts), Karen’s daughter, starts an explicit affair with her boss; and Lucy (Kerry Washington) obsesses over finding a child to adopt.
